“Self-portrait” was written by a young graduate of the Academy of Arts during his stay in Paris. The art of France had its influence on the formation of the views of the young artist. Obviously, this can explain so early appearance of the work, which is the source of the romantic direction of portraiture. The composition of the portrait is unusual.
The figure on the canvas is somewhat shifted to the edge of the canvas, which creates a sense of movement. The suit is also unusual: a wide working blouse and a leather waistcoat are clothes of a rather European character, unlike the caftan or academic uniform customary for the Russian artist. Free-brushed hair instead of a traditional wig gives the youthful look of confidence and ease.
The artist strove to convey a sincere openness, gentleness and kindness, which, judging by the memoirs of contemporaries, were especially characteristic of him. Shimmering greenish, brown warm tones make up an exquisite color scheme, giving a general impression of a touch of elegance and artistry. Shchukin tried to convey the whole psychology of a man who is distinguished by a special inner world. Such an image of the artist later became a favorite type of hero, young, pure and beautiful.
