Rembrandt died at the age of sixty-three, Hendrickje died two years earlier. This was a new great tragedy in the life of the master. After the death of his wife, he completes one of his latest works – “Self-portrait at the easel.”
From the depths of a warm dark brown background from the canvas, the master’s face looks full of restrained dignity, everything else is dissolved in the dark, and only the hands holding the palette attract the viewer’s attention.
This self-portrait was the first work of Rembrandt in the Louvre. He was acquired by shrewd Louis XIV, who ordered to buy all the work left after the artist’s death. It is to this royal decision that the Louvre owes such an extensive collection of works by the great master.
