According to the biblical legend, Salome is a Jewish princess, the daughter of Herodias and the stepdaughter of King Herod. King Herod concluded the prophet John the Baptist in prison, because he rebuked Herod, who took his wife Herodias from his brother and rudely violated the Jewish customs. But the execution of the prophet Herod did not dare, because he was very popular with the people.
Once, at the feast on Herod’s birthday, the stepdaughter Salome so pleased her stepfather with her dance that he promised to fulfill any of her requests, up to a gift in the form of a half-kingdom. Salome had consulted her mother, and Herodias, who fiercely hated John the Baptist for severely condemning her for his adultery, told Herod to ask the head of the prophet.
In obedience to the command, Salome asked Herod’s head for John the Baptist. Herod is horrified at the request of the stepdaughter, but fulfills this desire of the girl.
