Portrait of Simonetta Vespucci by Piero di Cosimo

Piero di Cosimo belonged to the generation of Leonardo da Vinci. He was a pupil of K. Rossell and in 1481-1482 together with him participated in the wall paintings of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. The formation of the artist was greatly influenced by the art of Signorelli and Leonardo da Vinci. In the works of the master, an eclectic combination of the tradition of the last generation of masters of the Early Renaissance and the artistic principles of the art of the High Renaissance is palpable.

Portrait of the legendary beauty Simonetta Vespucci – perhaps the most famous work of the master. J. Vasari saw in him the image of Cleopatra – the famous Egyptian queen. The artists of Botticelli’s circle were subdued by the beauty and virtue of Simonetta, and her features can be seen in many works of these masters. The young Simonetta, the beloved Giuliano de ‘Medici, died of consumption. Her image was imprinted forever by Piero di Cosimo, giving him an amazing poetry and lyricism.

At the same time, the portrait found an expression of the creative search for the artist, which reflected the characteristics of his artistic nature. Other famous works: “The Death of Procris”. The end of the XV century. National Gallery, London; “The Battle of Centaurs and Lapiths.” National Gallery, London; “Hunting”. OK. 1500. Metropolitan Museum, New York.
