Don Nicholas de Omasur, a great friend of the artist, a native of Antwerp, a rich silk merchant and very passionate about poetry. This portrait is doubles with a portrait of his wife, Isabel de Malcampo, currently lost.
Murillo continues the Flemish and Dutch tradition of double portraits inserted into the oval. Don Nicholas holds the skull, a symbol of death and resurrection.
