Sapozhnikova played an important role in the Kazan period of Feshin’s life, being not only his pupil, patron, but also a friend. In the excellent workshop of Nadezhda Mikhaylovna the teachers and pupils of the Kazan art school gathered. Here Feshin wrote a large number of portraits, including the owner of the workshop. The artist does not smooth, but does not emphasize a few rough features of Sapozhnikova. Beauty for Feshin is inseparable from individuality, he did not correct the created by nature. External and internal qualities are so inextricably linked in it that the viewer is involuntarily carried away by the unique, bright personality depicted.
A special charm to the portrait of Sapozhnikova gives incompleteness. Feshin often did not finish his work. Sometimes it is difficult to understand in which works this is an accident, and in which the conscious move of the master. The reception of non finito allowed to expose the creative process, to make it more important than the final result. He gave the opportunity to see how a composition is born, like a living organism, in which all elements are equally important. Rapid coal strokes, temperamental movements of the brush bring the internal dynamism to the finished image. It is interesting that the seeming carelessness and sweeping of the picturesque surface is in fact subordinated to a strictly verified internal structure.
