Shortly after Gauguin’s departure, Van Gogh began to write a small series of paintings in which one story engenders various stylistic hypotheses.
Five versions of the “Lullaby” in places contain tiny changes in color or background design. He acquired the habit of making one or more copies based on the first picture drawn from life.
