Painting, commissioned by Emperor Charles V, was performed in Augsburg in 1548. Isabella of Portugal married Emperor Charles V in 1526. She died very young when she was only 36 years old, and long before Charles V authorized Titian to paint her portrait. Her pale face emphasizes her softness, which is also visible in the thin fingers of her hands.
The whole portrait is centered around the excellent color harmony of red, white and gold. A charming color contrast is provided by the blue and green shades of the landscape.
