
Isabelle Lemonier is one of Manet’s favorite models: in the number of portraits painted from her, she is second only to Berthe Morisot. There are six of her portraits in oil, pastel, and several watercolors. Almost all of these portraits differ confident speed of execution. Each time posing in a new outfit, Isabel hardly posed for a very long time.
Perhaps the only exception is this work, one of the two largest in the entire series. It is noticeable that the head radically corresponded. The paint was scraped off, reapplied, and maybe even more than once. Although it is known that Manne asked Lemonier to give him photographs for working on portraits, each of the paintings was undoubtedly painted from life, and very quickly: the artist was always in a hurry to record the impression of the model while it was still fresh.
