We have a portrait of Major-General Fyodor Artemyevich Borovsky. The artist, who lived on the eve of romanticism, made his hero quite enthusiastic. The resolute and energetic turn of Borovsky’s head gives the portrait a well-known pathos.
The ceremonial uniform, the Order of George, which was given for military merit, and the traditional battle scene against the background tells us that before us a brave general is a participant in brilliant victories of the Russian arms of Suvorov times. And at the same time, Borovsky in the portrait appears to be a brave but short-sighted person. Probably, he was like that, and the artist accurately noticed the discrepancy between the solemnity of the situation and some everydayness of the expression of the person and the image depicted.
