Portrait of Emperor Paul I by Stepan Shchukin

The reserved portrait of the emperor in the strict form of the Colonel of the Preobrazhensky regiment was created during the mourning for the death of Catherine II in 1796. S. Shchukin, a major master of the Russian portrait, managed to escape the splendor and reveal the contradictory character of the most original monarch of Russia, who stated that he would become a “harsh messenger of power.” The reign of Paul I, whose main idea was the denial of the policy of his mother Catherine the Great, ended March 12, 1801. He was killed by conspirators in the Mikhailovsky Castle
