Alexander Semenovich Shishkov is a writer and statesman. Shishkov enrolled in the Naval Cadet Corps, where he was directed by Ilya L. Kutuzov. In 1771, Mr.. Shishkov went to the midshipmen and was together with his comrades sent to Arkhangelsk, and the following year was promoted to midshipmen.
In 1776, Mr.. Shishkov was appointed to the frigate “North Eagle”, which was from Kronstadt to circulate through the Mediterranean and the Dardanelles, three other ships to the Black Sea. The trip lasted for 3 years, introduced Shishkov to the then-current situation in Italy, Greece and Turkey.
On his return from the foreign voyage Shishkov was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the naval cadet corps for teaching naval tactics to midshipmen. By this time the beginning of Shishkov’s literary studies is related: in part these studies are connected with the pedagogical service of Shishkov, in part they can be considered the result of Shishkov’s independent interest in literature. He translated the German “Children’s Library” Kampa, which consisted of moralizing stories for children, in verse and in prose, was a great success, for a long time they taught children to read and write.
Literary and pedagogical works of Shishkov were interrupted in 1790 by the war with Sweden: in the rank of captain of the second rank Shishkov commanded the frigate “Nicholas”, which was part of the squadron of Chichagov. After this short and unsuccessful war, Shishkov settles in Petersburg and is given scientific studies in the marine business. In 1796, he was elected an academician, and from 1813. became president of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
