Chaplygin Sergey Alekseevich, scientist in the field of theoretical mechanics, one of the founders of modern hydro and aerodynamics, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Hero of Socialist Labor.
A pupil and associate of NE Zhukovsky. He graduated from Moscow University. Since 1893 he taught physics in a women’s secondary school, a mechanic in the Moscow Higher Technical School, the Moscow Engineering School, and the Moscow University. Chaplygin is the organizer and director of the Moscow Higher Women’s Courses.
At the end of 1918, Zhukovsky was involved in the organization of TsAGI, in 1921-30 the chairman of the college, in 1928-31 the director of the institute; in 1921-31 led the creation of the largest aerohydrodynamic laboratories TsAGI. Chaplygin solved a number of the most complicated problems of aeromechanics and aviation, made a major contribution to the theory of differential equations.
The name Chaplygin in 1942 named the street in Moscow in the area of Chistye Prudy. His name was given to the TsAGI laboratory in 1926. On the building of the laboratory and at the house where Chaplygin lived in 1920-42, memorial plaques were erected, in the park near the house – the bust of Chaplygin by the sculptor ZM Vilensky. The Chaplygin Museum Apartment is open in the house.
