Philosophers by Mikhail Nesterov

Philosophers by Mikhail Nesterov

Nesterov met October with a double portrait of religious philosophers – P. Florensky and S. Bulgakov against the backdrop of the landscape around Sergiev Posad.

To participate in the implementation of the Plan of monumental propaganda neither the forces nor the intentions were not, and Nesterov leaves Moscow. His workshop is ruined, and he sadly states the need, as a young man, to start everything from scratch. In the portrait, Nesterov wrote his friends, prominent representatives of religious and philosophical thought.

The artist admired the world of ideas and feelings of Father Pavel Florensky, his famous book “The Pillar and Affirmation of Truth”. He chose the pair portrait genre to show two antinomic characters in a single search for truth.
