Tiepolo was a master of oil sketching. To compare with him in this genre could, perhaps, only Rubens. In the process of work on the order Tiepolo, as a rule, created several sketches of oil, thinking over the composition of his idea.
The most elaborate type of oil sketch – the so-called “model” – the artist did to show the customer, so that he saw what the picture would look like. The best collection of oil sketches Tiepolo has a gallery Kurtolda in London.
Here you can see many “models” of the artist – from the early frescoes for Palazzo Santi in Venice to five sketches for the last completed works for the church of San Pascual in the Spanish city of Arances. One of them, dated 1767, is shown at the top.
