Napoleon on the Borodino heights by Vasily Vereshchagin

About 20 paintings Vereshchagin devoted to the Patriotic War of 1812. All his paintings related to this subject, he wrote in the period from 1887 to 1901. The artist wanted to prove to the people that Napoleon was not a hero, and to show the patriotism of the Russian people. This picture is no exception, it was written in 1897. On it, the artist portrayed the battle of Borodino. We see the emperor sitting in a chair while the rest of the soldiers are waiting for orders and looking out for the enemy.

Napoleon sits with arrogant air, folding his arms over his chest and stretching his leg to the drum. He is obviously tense, and self-satisfied. But, despite this, it can be assumed that he is alarmed and thoughtful. He seems to be waiting for something, does not give the command of the offensive. And we can assume that he is afraid that his army will not fight this battle and they will lose. It is known that in this battle he was suspicious and tried not to fall under the bullets.

Very realistic Vereshchagin painted the uniforms of soldiers and their weapons. In my opinion, the composition is very beautiful. Seated on the throne of the king surrounded by his retinue, they can still be called faithful dogs and soldiers who were forced to fight.

Thanks Vereshchagin for his cycle of masterpieces that allow us to get acquainted with historical events, see them, and imagine in our imagination how everything happened.

I dream that all people live peacefully, so that there is no warrior between the countries. There is nothing more terrible than the loss of loved ones. Russia is a great nation, it can be friends with different nations. Our country should have enough wealth, in the form of vast expanses of fields, minerals and other values. But we must not allow our people to offend and insult, let us not live as prosperous as we would like, but we must accept life as wealth, and friends and relatives nearby as irreplaceable jewels. I love my country.
