Nailing to the cross by Francisco Ribalta

Works by Francisco Ribalta are rarely found in museums outside Spain.

The Hermitage is the earliest signed and dated work of the artist – “Nailing to the cross.” In the broken figures, deliberate gestures can be traced the influence of Italian mannerism.

The drama of events is emphasized by the gloomy gloomy color, and the sharp light-and-white contrasts highlight the main characters: the half-naked figure of Christ, as well as the backs, hands, ugly faces of his tormentors.

A landscape background with a heavy pre-storm sky indicates an approaching tragedy. Ribalta one of the first Spanish artists began to use the light finds of Caravaggio.
