Perhaps this painting was painted by the artist Domenico Theotokopuli, who became world famous under the name of El Greco, commissioned by Fulvio Orsini, the librarian of Cardinal Allesandro Farnese, in whose palace El Greco lived in 1570-1572. It is known that Orsini purchased seven paintings of the young master for the library of the cardinal, in all likelihood, “Mount Sinai” was one of them.
This small picture repeats the plot of the Central panel of the reverse side of the Modnish triptych, written during El Greco’s stay in Venice.
The painting depicts the peaks of Mount Sinai, sacred to Judaism and Christianity.
