Madonna del Maare by Sandro Botticelli

This “Sea Madonna”, apparently, belongs to the early period of Botticelli’s creativity, which is felt in some rigidity of the poses and folds of clothing, which in his mature works gently flow.

The figure of the Christ child, the seed that sprinkles the right hand, and the left bearing the fruit that gives birth to them, has elongated outline, characteristic of the later, more stylized style of the artist.

The scene in the background depicts a seashore with strange Gothic buildings and a ship, which can mean that the painting was painted by order of some workshop related to sea voyages.
