Love of the earth and heaven by Titian Vecellio

Painting by artist Tiziano Vecellio “Love is earthly and heavenly.” The size of the painting is 118 x 279 cm, canvas, oil. In his work, the artist develops and develops peculiar painterly problems both for Giorgione and for the entire Venetian school. It is characterized by a gradual transition from the soft modeling of forms and soft, reserved, cold radiance of Giorgione’s colors to the powerful, light-filled coloristic symphonies of the period of creative maturity, that is, from 1515-1516.

In these years, however, Titian brings new and very significant nuances in the understanding of human beauty, in the emotional-figurative structure of the language of Venetian painting. The heroes of Titian may be less subtle than the heroes of Giorgione, but they are also less mysterious, more fully active, more integrated, more deeply imbued with a clear, sensual, “pagan” beginning. “Love is earthly and heavenly” – one of the first works of Titian, which clearly reveals the artist’s uniqueness. The plot of the picture is still mysterious. Regardless of whether the dressed and naked women portray Medea and Venus) or, less likely, symbolize love on earth and in heaven – the key to understanding the content of this work lies not in deciphering the plot.

The purpose of Titian is to convey a certain state of mind. The soft and calm colors of the landscape, the freshness of the naked body, the clear sonority of the beautiful and somewhat cool colors in the tone of the clothes give the impression of calm joy. The movements of both figures are majestically beautiful and at the same time full of life charm. The tranquil rhythms of the scenery behind them seem to shade the naturalness and nobility of the movement of beautiful human bodies.
