Marco Ricci, the nephew of Sebastiano Ricci, is the ancestor of the 18th century Venetian landscape painting. In the compositions of his uncle, he often performed landscape backgrounds. It is believed that the marine species in the works of Allessandro Magnasco also belong to his brush.
In his pastoral landscapes, using the Venetian technique “pittura di macchia e tocco forte”, Marco Ricci variously conveys atmospheric nuances and always contrasts the romantically agitated nature with small genre scenes surrounded by a magnificent landscape.
In this regard, the question always arises whether his famous uncle did not write the staff figures? Interestingly, the compositions are inspired by real impressions: from Venice, in search of suitable motifs, the artist went to her neighborhood.
The presented canvas depicts places in the Pieve Valley, the birthplace of the painter. Marco Ricci was a universal artist – painter, decorator, cartoonist, graphic artist. There are 3 preserved engraving landscapes, in which, as in gouaches and pastels, there is his interest in the problems of illumination.
