Painting of the French artist Jean Honore Fragonard “Jean-Claude Richard, abbot Saint-Non.” The size of the picture is 80 x 65 cm, canvas, oil. The painter’s painting is also known under the title “Portrait of the Abbot Saint-Non in an Imaginary Costume”; the canvas is included in a series of portraits of “Fantastic Figures.”
Another portrait of the abbot Saint-Non in the costume of a nobleman of the era of Louis XIII is in the Catalan National Museum of Art in Barcelona. In the late 1750s, the abbe Saint-Non invites Jean Honore Fragonard and Hubert Robert to Villa d’Este in Tivoli. Here, Fragonard creates a series of poetic drawings depicting the villa, its picturesque terraced park with alleys of huge cypresses and baroque water cascades.
In the canvas painted by “Vrachki” in those days, the contrast of modern life and majestic ancient ruins attracted the attention of the artist.
