It comes from the Assumption Church in the village of Krivoye, Arkhangelsk region. The icon probably was a temple image of a small ancient church in the name of the introduction of the Virgin into the temple.
In the Assumption Church of the Krivetsky churchyard, erected in 1775, it probably fell after the abolition of the old church along with other icons. The literary basis of the plot of the icon is the story of Proto-Gospel from Jacob about the dedication of the baby Mary to the service of the Lord.
According to the text, at the age of three, Mary was brought by parents to the Old Testament temple, where she lived to 12 years old, receiving food from the hands of an angel. The majestic Old Testament temple, on the threshold of which Mary the high priest Zacharias meets, is interpreted on the icon as a cozy interior of a small three-nave church. Three-part division of the temple is emphasized by its three chapters and three hanging lamps, strengthened under the arches on the chains.
The baby Maria is represented twice in the composition. In the “introduction” scene, her fragile figure is depicted against the background of the doorway, in the scene of “feeding the Angel” – on the upper step of the high staircase.
A unique feature of the icon is the inclusion in her composition of the figure of the righteous Joseph the Betrothed, who by lot took from the hands of Zacharias the twelve-year-old girl born in the temple to Mary to maintain her purity and integrity.
