Horsewoman by Karl Bryullov

One of the most famous of his works, “The Horsewoman”, Karl Bryullov wrote at the request of the Countess Julia Samoilova in 1832. The name of Samoilov can be considered even on the collar of a dog. Initially, the canvas was exhibited in Milan, then it was in the collection of the Countess. And in 1896 the canvas was purchased by the Tretyakov Gallery.

The big confusion came with the definition of the personalities depicted in the picture. At first, it was believed that the picture itself depicted the Countess Julia Samoilova, but subsequently the researchers proved that Bryullov portrayed two children of the countess – Giovanni and Amicia Pacini. The original name of the painting is “Giovanni on horseback”. Interesting fact – from this picture in Italy was created many engravings, but there they are considered a portrait of the famous Italian singer – Malibran.

In the picture, Bryullov painted the scene of a riding trip – Giovanni returns home and drives up on horseback to the high porch, on which her step-sister, Amalitia, greets her with an enthusiastic glance. The movement fills all the figures depicted in the picture – a horse, excited by a walk, beats with a hoof, the dog, rejoicing at the return of the mistress, throws a horse under hoofs.

The joy of meeting after a short separation – this is the main mood that fills this picture. The viewer himself is immersed in this atmosphere of joy and unreasonable expectation.
