Hirokoji Street in Sitaia by Utagawa Hiroshige

The name Sitaia came from the location of this place by the Ueno hill. Here passed the road Sitayahirokokzi, along which the shogun came to the temple of Kanailzi. After a major fire in 1657, the road was expanded in the period of Genroku, in order to prevent the spread of fires in the future. On both sides of the street were built houses, there were many shops. The engraving on the right shows the Mizukaya store, which was bought by a kimono merchant. This shop was the supplier of goods for the government of the Ovari region.

This building was one of the largest kimono stores in Edo along with Etiogo in Surugata, Daimaraja in Odanmata. A little further, to the right of Mizukaya, was a warehouse, which was a common occurrence. A small house with red circles on the curtains of noreens is a hairdresser. In front of the store, a group of women in the same kimono and with the same umbrellas, probably heading to the Ueno mountains to enjoy the sakura, accompanied by porters, with boxes of snacks. In the foreground is a group of armed samurai.

In this case, the early version of the engraving underwent significant changes. In the later version: the sky brightens, the stylized clouds in the background are also highlighted, the roof of the building in the foreground turns blue-green, the color of the cartouche also changes.
