“The Garden of Love” is the most mannered of the paintings that have come down to us. More than two dozen naked figures intertwined in a complex, elegant arabesque. Their deliberately smooth movements merge into one wavy line, which also submits to the landscape.
The color range is equally artificial, in which pink bodies and red hair are contrasted with bluish greenery. It is difficult to imagine a more distant art from the then reality.
Only seven years later, the war of the Dutch for their independence will end, and the painting by Van Mandera already suggests, as it were, offering to give up arms and indulge in the joys of life.
