Fresh Chevalier. Morning of the official who received the first cross by Pavel Fedotov

In 1844 Fedotov came out of the stake and decided to realize his dream: to become finally a professional artist. During the day he observed and memorized curious sketches on the streets of Petersburg, and drew in the evenings. First, Fedotov worked in graphic techniques: pencil, watercolor and sepia, later switched to oil painting. The plot of the first oil painting – “Fresh Chevalier” – was first developed in sepia “Morning of the official who received the first cross”. The small room in which the action takes place seems even closer due to the fact that it is cluttered with broken furniture, empty bottles, and osling pans.

Here, many things tell about the habits of the owner. On the table there are traces of yesterday’s dinner, and toiletries, got here in the morning, when the hero began to gather for service. Under one table a dog sleeps, from under another it is visible… The head of the guest. The man himself stands in the midst of all this chaos in an unexpectedly majestic pose, and the cook with a sneer indicates the boss, inflated from the arrogance, at the leaky boot. In the first picture Fedotov only tried himself in oil painting. Introducing color, he painted more individual objects rather than united them into a harmonious color composition.
