Fantasies by Michael Whelan

Michael Whelan received the Hugo Award sixteen times, setting a record for this award. In 1992, he was awarded the “Super Hugo” with the formulation “The best artist in the last 50 years.” In the picture of Michael Whelan “Fantasy” is depicted a teenage girl sitting by the river on a large smooth stone.

Illuminated by the yellow light of the lantern, the cringing figure seems lonely and defenseless. Fantasies generated by the magic of a warm moonlit night, take a different bizarre shape: stone pillars become like the feet of a giant giant, and a frighteningly ghostly creature in the blue light of the moon seems to clap its webbed wings right now. Night flight to a children’s fairy tale.
