In his film “Evening in Ukraine”, AI Kuindzhi depicts a purely Ukrainian rural landscape. In the center of the picture are Ukrainian huts with thatched roofs and white chimneys. They are on a small mound, which is surrounded by a self-made fence of twigs. Near the fence grow colorful flowers and trees.
Above the hill there is a rural path that passes between high branchy trees, forming a beautiful natural avenue, at the end of which one more Ukrainian house is visible. On the right side there are many hillocks and small natural elevations on which Ukrainian huts are erected.
Between the huts stands a light stripe among the greenery of a multitude of winding paths. Summer day came to an end. It was already evening and the sky was shining with a magnificent sunset. The outgoing sun so beautifully painted the sky that looking at the picture, it seems as if you are getting into some unknown country or a fairy tale. Like, it’s not reality, but some kind of fictional world.
The lilac-blue color of the sky is seen through the high branches of the poplars. Above this layer we see a pink color, which gradually changes from a gently pink to a saturated shade, and vice versa. A little above the sky covers a light yellow shade, and the “rainbow” ends with a pale blue color. Here and there in the sky there are violet-lilac small clouds. The sun, as if specifically chose the right location.
The trees standing near the hut on the hill cast their shadows on her white side, and, thanks to the sunlight, the walls of the house were painted in colorful colors of sunset. The artist managed very skillfully to betray the beauty of the sunset.
