This is the typical “metaphysical” work of de Chirico, which is an attempt through a set of real images to reveal the “magical” meaning of being. The urban landscape here seems to be inspired by sleep; there is no air in it, it is dominated by an unreal light and a ringing silence. All traffic is abolished – this applies even to the train. The “displacement” characteristic of de Chirico is connected with the train, the smoke, as if glued to the chimney of a locomotive, shows perfect calm, and the flags on the building meanwhile tense in the wind.
