The painting of the same period, “Elegy”, was awarded a large silver medal at the World Exhibition in Paris.
This work reflects the moods of a certain section of the Russian intelligentsia, experiencing in that complex, full contradiction the time of a sense of incomprehension, loneliness and appealing to symbolism in art.
According to the famous landscape painter NN Dubovsky, Vasnetsovskaya “Elegy” made a great impression on Leo Tolstoy.
