“Departure of St. Paula” can also be counted among the masterpieces of the artist. The architectural landscape resembles the view of Ostia’s harbor. On either side of the bay, buildings rise to the depth of the canvas. The light of the setting sun, running from the horizon, illuminates the foreground, which shows the scene of the farewell of St. Paula with the children before leaving for the Holy Land.
The green waters of the bay at the horizon catch the rays of the setting sun and dissolve on the border of the sea and sky. The whole space of the canvas is flooded with amazing golden light. The picture evokes a feeling of peace and tranquility.
