In addition to those present in this picture of Madonna and John the Theologian, Saint Dominic, the founder of the Dominican order, also worships the crucifixion. This is a steady motif in the work of Fra Angelico – in the evangelical scenes he has a spectator from another time.
Such works of the artist were innovative for their time, marking a new approach to iconography and means of expression. In them there is no external action and excessive detailing, which, in general, is “conceptual” for Fra Angelico – nothing should, in his opinion, distract the contemplator from direct communication with God.
