Many know Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin precisely from his illustrations of Russian fairy tales. One of such famous illustrations is his “Baba Yaga” to the fairy tale “Vasilisa the Beautiful”.
In the illustration, we see a Babu-yaga flying in a mortar. In one hand she has a pestle for pomel grain, and in another pomelo, they sweep in the oven, before baking bread. She waves them, giving the stupa a great speed. This is evident from her disheveled hair. The face of Baba-yaga is very evil, her hands are long, and her whole image leads to fear. She sits in her so-called plane, her legs clenched. Her green sarafan is knocked out of the stupa, and the sleeves of the pink shirt are rolled up above the elbows, making the arms seem even longer. Around her is a dark forest.
All the trees just wilt from lack of sunlight, and on the ground, from the presence of Baba-yaga, there are fungus-mushrooms. It’s just the perfect place to live it. It is quite real that the grandmother is going to his hut on chicken legs.
The author selected the appropriate colors. In general, the green color of different shades predominates. And although the picture is fabulous, but so, no less gloom, darkness and fear. The sight of Baba Yaga inspires fear and unpleasant sensations. Thus, the author shows that she is a negative character.
