Iosif Semenovich Chirikov belonged to the Mstera elite. His works and works of his studio differed virtuosity of execution.
Recently discovered and received in the Armory Chamber, the folding of 1899 with the image of a multi-tiered iconostasis can amaze the most experienced spectator: hundreds of miniature figures, whose size of heads hardly exceeds 2-3 millimeters, inhabit the composition. Icons of an outstanding and yet insufficiently appreciated master of icon painting are found in many active temples; museums and private collections in Russia. “Archangel Michael” from the collection of the Institute of Restoration is a typical example of the art of IS Chirikov.
Jewelry pattern, chased finish details, enamel overlay colors turn the icon into a kind of jewel. The icon painter liked to place the saints in a spatial environment. Backgrounds that imitate the colors of the twilight sky, narrow landscape poses are complemented by layered “ice” hills, and sometimes architectural scenery. Fields, as a rule, are covered with rich ornamentation, leaving impression of precious enamels on the scanner. The landscape from the bird’s-eye view melts in the haze.
On the left is a city in the “Florentine taste”. A scarlet flame flashes with a crimson flame, modeled by the created gold. On the golden wings, the blackening is lost.
