The first master who started working in this technique was Suzuki Harunobu. He not only brought technical innovations to the art of woodcuts, but also used its capabilities in conveying the complex emotional state of his heroes and heroines.
Harunobu also used the richest color scale, obtained when typing from seven or more boards, and such a technique as a roll that creates a smooth transition from dark to light. The main thing is that he used a great variety of lines of different character: thick black, and colored, and embossed, giving a barely noticeable hollow on soft paper.
Harunobu – the creator of a new ideal of beauty: a young girl with an elegant thin figure and tiny handles and – legs. The prototype of it was a real woman – the daughter of a greengrocer Osen, in honor of which modern urban dandies composed poems and songs.
