“Zodiac” is a calendar for the magazine “Pen”, made by a Czech artist using color lithography technique. In this large-scale calendar, Mukha displayed all his rich ornamental fantasy. The zodiac signs surround the beautiful and strict profile of a woman dressed in royal attire, artfully executed jewels and a luxurious headdress.
All this together, with an alienated and majestic appearance gives the woman the appearance of a priestess of an unknown mysterious cult. The central figure and the zodiac circle are framed by decorative elements of Byzantine, Moorish and Scythian origin.
“Zodiac” is one of the most popular works of the Fly. At least nine variants of lithography are known, both with and without text. Later, Alphonse Mucha used the motif of a woman from this calendar as the basis for his sculpture Nature.
