This is an altar image for the church of the city of Montauban, called the “Vow of Louis XIII, asking for the protection of the Madonna for the French kingdom.”
Ingres deliberately decided the image of the Madonna close to the Sistine Madonna, expressing his admiration for Raphael and following the behests of the artist. The canvas brought the artist an unprecedented success.
