Virgil reading the Aeneid by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres

The first version of this historical painting, in which the great ancient Roman poet reads his immortal poem to the family of Emperor Augustus, was written seven years earlier and refers to the time of Engr’s study at the French Academy in Rome.

And here – in an effort to transfer the plasticity of the sculptural relief to painting – it also echoed his then fascination with the ancient art. In 1819, Ingres repeated the picture, having solved it this time more concisely and expressively. By the way, such a return to the once-beloved story – one of the features of Engrian painting.
