Three Elders by Mikhail Nesterov

Artist Mikhail Nesterov never found solace in the world of his time. Only virgin nature was an inexhaustible source of his inspiration, which was reflected in every work of this remarkable author. He believed that with its help it is possible to pacify the stormy and rebellious nature of human nature, as well as to cleanse your soul from most of the vices.

In the painting “The Three Elders”, which has another name “Chanterelle”, the viewer sees a warm and sunny day in a forest grove. The main characters of the canvas are three elders dressed in monastic robes. They are sitting on a stump. Perhaps they stopped to rest after a long journey, or decided to take the time to contemplate the rich expanses of their native land.

The elders settled on a meadow covered with green juicy grass. In the background of the picture flows a calm clean river, surrounded by picturesque hills. As if these beautiful distances were shrouded in mist or delicate veil.

Ahead of the elders extends a forest bushes. There grow thin-stemmed birches, spreading spruces and mighty pines, leaving thick crowns under the very heavens. A chanterelle comes out of its green house, slightly bending down to the ground. She is not afraid of people, because she knows that they will not do her any harm and, possibly, will give something tasty.

Old people carefully consider the forest guest. Their faces are calm and friendly. It seems they are amused by the observation of this sweet and inquisitive creation of God.

A visit to the Solovetsky Monastery played an important role in the development of the creative style of Nesterov. He was attracted by the pure and solitary life of monks, full of kindness and peace.

The painter compared the world in which they are, with a beautiful children’s fairy tale that happened in reality. In every bush, flower, or fur animal, he found the ideals hidden in his heart.
