Volkov, condemning the immorality of one person, was rather coldly received by the Council of the Academy, although it found a hot response in the broad circles of Russian society. And yet, for the painting “Interrupted betrothal” in 1860, Volkov receives the Gold Medal, however, in the nomination “distinguished in expression.”
