
In addition to the well-known mythological and historical characters, in the works of Leighton there are figures that are difficult to identify. As a rule, these are female figures in antique robes, depicted in meaningful, thoughtful poses.
It can be assumed that some of these mysterious women are ancient prophets, Sibyls. At least, nothing more definite when looking at the painting “The Infusion of the Spirit”, 1890, comes to mind. As for the heroine “Tears”, 1889-90, then, probably, we have an allegorical figure. The lack of a plot in such works makes them related to the works of esthete artists.
