St. John of the Ladder and the image of the monastic ascension

The composition is a repetition of older specimens. Left on the background of the pink church of Sts. John Climacus with a scroll in his hands, teaching the monks standing before him.

Below is a group of monks standing in front of a staircase reaching to the skies. On it the monks rise. Some of them, seized by demons, fall into hell’s mouth, others, guarded by angels, reach the heavenly sphere, where they are met by Christ, the Mother of God and saints.

On the margin and background are placed lengthy texts from the teachings of John of the Ladder. The icon is a high-quality monument of early XIX century painting. It represents artistic and iconographic interest, it has a museum significance.
