St. Augustine by Vittore Carpaccio

St. Augustine by Vittore Carpaccio

Augustine is depicted in his cell. He does not yet know about the death of St. Jerome, he is in meditation on the glory and joy of God’s servant, who, after the death of his body, will join the soul with Christ. St. Augustine intends to write a treatise on this; he writes a letter to Saint Jerome, wanting to know his opinion on this matter.

The bright light radiating from the windows symbolizes the radiance of the soul of Jerome. Mitra, pastoral staff and sea shell are attributes of St. Augustine. Augustine is exactly the saint for whom symbolizing the secular and religious principle through music is highly appropriate. He was the author of the first Christian treatise on music – “De musica”, written just in the year of his baptism.

Therefore, the picture shows notes. Augustine’s authority in the field of music remained unusually high throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
