Murillo’s preserved drawings allow us to say that he was an excellent draftsman. The fact that he took the art of drawing with all seriousness is also confirmed by the fact that in his famous self-portrait he included not only the painter’s tools, but also the tools of a graphic artist.
Apparently, Murillo began to work on each of his canvases precisely from a preparatory drawing, where he worked through the poses of the characters, thought through the arrangement of details, “collected” the elements of the composition into a single whole. The works of “Saint Joseph with the Sleeping Infant Christ”, “Saint Francis Embracing Christ” and “Little John the Baptist with the Lamb” belong to this kind of drawings.
