A small living room, a small table surrounded by soft sofas and armchairs. What can be more cozy and filled with home peace? Anything, but not the room depicted on the canvas by Robert Falk. His “Red Furniture” from the very first glance fills the soul with the sensation of the tragedy that has taken place or is momentarily ready to break out.
Work on the canvas was conducted in a difficult period for Falk. Heavy experiences related to personal problems, disturbing thoughts about the social upheavals and their unintended consequences – all this profound expression of color and form reflected in his paintings.
“Red furniture” belongs to the genre of the interior, there are no animated characters. Only a red sofa and armchairs, a table with a black bottle standing on it and ready to fall off a white tablecloth. At the same time, incredibly strong emotions emanate from the canvas. A rich red color gives the furniture a huge, ready to absorb everything around with aggressive energy. A little more, and under her pressure will fall and disappear white tablecloth – the only echo of light in this gloomy, windowless space. The same fate soon overtakes an unstable one-legged table, after which in the frightening dusk of the room there will be only an all-consuming red chaos.
The most subtle color psychologism imbued this picture. A terrible and creepy red interior, the expression of which was enhanced by nervous, chaotic strokes of the brush, gave birth to many associations. The canvas was perceived as a new interpretation of the “Last Supper”, saw the allegory of revolutionary events and their consequences, felt despair, deep tragedy, or, on the contrary, a life-affirming beginning.
There is no plot as such. But to fill the picture with emotion and drama, the artist did not need it. Describe not a concrete, but a “plastic event” – this is the essence of painting by Falk. And the work “Red Room” serves as a vivid example.
