Home, from abroad, Bryullov was returning on board the ship Themistocles, under the leadership of Captain Vladimir Kornilov. In this journey, this portrait was painted.
Kornilov – an extraordinary personality, so Karl Bryullov and took up writing this portrait. The captain is young, energetic and devoted to fanaticism. He does not yet know what fate awaits him, but his look is surely directed to the future. Faith, faith in the fatherland and the king, that’s what is read in this view. He is emphatically strict towards himself and his business.
You can see this portrait at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
