On the back of the picture is a late inscription: TOM-MASO MOSTI DI ANNI XXV L’ANNO MDXXVI TITIA-NO DE CADORE PITTORE Florence, Palazzo Pitti, Palatine Gallery
The painting comes from the collection of Cardinal Leopoldo de ‘Medici and after his death in 1675 entered the Palazzo Pitti. In accordance with the inscription on the back, long considered a portrait of Tommaso Mosti, secretary of the Duke of Ferrara, Alfonso d’Este.
However, since Tommaso was a spiritual person and the portrait depicted a young man in secular clothes, it was suggested that the model of Titian was the brother of Tommaso Vincenzo Mosti, the favorite of Alfonso d’Este
