Portrait of Anna Maria by Salvador Dali

Portrait of Anna Maria Surrealist painter Salvador Dali is an autobiographical imprint of the brother’s relationship with his sister. Being the younger sister of the artist, Anna Maria Dali often acted as a model for the painter. Not only the world of painting brought the brother and sister closer, but the trembling feelings for each other and eternal love, later betrayed by El Salvador after meeting with Gala – the only passion of his life.

The presented portrait of the girl is one of the early works of the surrealist. At that time, Dali had already decided on his own direction in painting, but his work was still calm and balanced. On the canvas depicted a young lady of Spanish blood with a clean skin and an unusual cut of the eyes. Her clothes – a tribute to the fashion of the 20s of the last century – are simple and clean.

Cotton fabric slightly adheres to the body, reflects the shades of the room, wrinkles in creases. The position of Anna Maria’s body speaks of an exhaustion and a midday heat, fatigue from posing and coquetry. The older brother caught her mood and the character of momentary laziness.

The artist, as usual, paid attention to the anatomical accuracy of the construction of the body, in particular to the face and palm, the flowing grape cluster. The color of the blue of the body is alarming, so transparent and painful, causing emotions of pity and a desire to warm the girl. A whitewashed wall with an uneven relief looks quite natural and speaks of a deliberately chosen background. A successful combination of white and white is cleverly played. Given the temperature drop of the paint – a warmer plan and cool clothes.

The picture came out wonderful, clean, modest. It does not discern the sexual overtones and painful consciousness of the author, the presence of the perverted perception of a woman as a representative of another from the male. A simple love of beauty and delights of relationships with a defenseless and gay sister gave birth to portraits of Anna Maria one by one.

The solitude of the model and the author for several years was the only outlet for El Salvador, who lost his mother early. Torn knees, secluded corners, secrets from his father, and this is a painting without unnecessary witnesses of little Anna – the only warm memories from the childhood of the artist. The portrait of Dali’s sister was a success. He is real and does not herald the appearance of soft and flying productions of a more mature artist.
