Venetian Rosalba Carriera was the daughter of an artist and lace maker. At the beginning of her successful creative activity, she painted porcelain snuffbox for sale to travelers and for the rest of her life she retained a love of miniature. In the XVII-XVIII centuries in Europe, the technique of pastels was highly valued.
A characteristic gentle, “light smear”, as admirers of the work of Rosalba Carriera, softness, bright color scale and the desire of the “skillful maiden” to give their models a special charm made her pastels literally exemplary for contemporaries – portraits were copied by other artists.
For the descendants of the work, the Carriere became a sort of mirror of time. Thus, fashion historians often illustrate stories with her creations. The researchers suggest that the portrait portrays the daughter of the Consul General of France in Milan, Le Blona. In the collection of the Gallery of the Academy there is a portrait of the consul himself, on which also the light sfumatto softens the forms of the most delicate aura.
